Around Mayfair Reserve, we know him as our on-site personal trainer, and a pretty inspirational one at that.
But in addition to offering his personal training expertise with the residents of Mayfair Reserve, Tony Becker lives and breathes fitness. He admits to growing up overweight and, like many people who struggle with weight issues throughout childhood and adolescence, realized he had to make a change.
“My weight was holding me back from reaching my full athletic potential,” said Becker, who went from 260 pound to 185 pounds in about four months. “This changed my confidence, mindset, and career path.”
He pursued a degree in exercise and sports science with a minor in nutrition and strength/conditioning from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, all of which has led him to where he is today.
Mayfair Reserve recently had the chance to catch up with Tony, and talk about life, fitness, and small business. Here’s what he shared with us:
Mayfair Reserve: What has been the biggest challenge of your career and how did you overcome it?
Tony Becker: The fitness field tends to have a lot of turnover due to long hours. As a manager of a studio, it was always a challenge to see a good trainer leave, but I understood that everyone wants to pursue career advancement. Clients get attached to trainers, especially if they’ve worked with them for a long time. I was lucky and didn’t have to experience too many high turnover situations. When overcoming a difficult transition in our studio it actually allowed for our team to become closer because we knew we had to buckle down for a few weeks. Also, reassuring the clients that we’d have amazing trainers to be back in our studio as well as involving the clients and trainers in the interview process helped quite a bit!
MR: What do you most enjoy about your career?
TB: The best part about being in the fitness field is definitely the gratitude that clients show once they’ve have reached their goal(s)! It’s one of the most rewarding experiences you could imagine.
MR: Who inspires you and why?
TB: I have many inspirations in my life. My mom comes to mind when thinking about work ethic. She gave up everything and worked multiple jobs when I was young just to provide for her family and make sure I had everything that I needed!
MR: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about running a business?
TB: That everything happens for a reason and you’re only able to control how you react. Things are going to go wrong, and that’s okay. How you react and learn from those situations is the difference between successful business owners and ones that aren’t.
MR: Can you describe a moment or moments when you stopped and realized this is why you are doing what you’re doing with your life?
TB: So many moments from the fitness field and my career specifically bring a smile to my face. One particular situation allows me to see exactly how my impact allows others to live a happier and more fulfilling life. I had a group of ladies start training (all at different times throughout my career) and they developed this bond to make sure they kept active not only for themselves, but most importantly for their grandchildren! They started calling themselves the G.I.T. Squad (Grandmas In Training) and grandchild after grandchild, you could see the joy and excitement in their faces each day that they were able to provide that playful and active role in their grandchildren’s life! It makes everything worth it seeing that!
MR: What advice would you offer to other small business owners?
TB: Don’t worry about the things that could go wrong; instead, get excited about the things that could go right!
